What is CPQ?
CPQ stands for Configure, Price, Quote: software that lets sales assemble a configurable or custom product (Configure), automatically calculate the right price (Price) and issue a correct quote in one click (Quote). It prevents errors on variant, custom and project products and speeds up the quoting process.
What does CPQ stand for?
CPQ is short for Configure, Price, Quote - the three steps a salesperson goes through for a product that does not come "off the shelf". Configure: pick the options, dimensions or parts. Price: automatically calculate the right price, including tiers, discounts and cost build-up. Quote: generate a correct quote with the right bill of materials underneath. The software guards that only valid combinations are chosen and that the price is always right.
What problem does CPQ solve?
For configurable products - machines, furniture, windows, packaging, projects - the number of possible variants quickly runs into the thousands. A salesperson doing that with a price list and Excel makes mistakes: impossible combinations, wrong prices, forgotten extras. CPQ catches that with rules, so even a new salesperson - or the customer in the webshop - assembles a correct, profitable quote.
CPQ, a product configurator and variants - what is the difference?
These terms get mixed up. Product variants are pre-defined combinations (red/M, blue/L) - fine for a handful of options, unworkable at hundreds. A product configurator assembles the product from rules instead of a fixed list. CPQ is the broader term: configurator plus pricing logic plus quote in one flow. In short: variants = list, configurator = rules, CPQ = rules plus price plus quote.
Does Odoo have CPQ?
Standard Odoo covers variants and a basic product configurator, and with Sales plus quotation templates you get a long way. For real CPQ - complex rules, price build-up, a bill of materials that flows into production - we build CPQ Builder: Odoo-native, it writes real Odoo records and a real bill of materials, not a second system alongside. So quote, order and production stay one chain. At IDD Parts and Decoflorall this runs in practice.
CPQ vs configurator vs variants
The difference in one table:
| Variants | Configurator | CPQ | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | Fixed list of combinations | Assembled from rules | Rules + price + quote |
| Scales to | Dozens of options | Hundreds+ | Hundreds+ with pricing logic |
| Price build-up | Per variant | Limited | Full (tiers, cost price) |
| Quote + BOM | Manual | Partial | Automatic |
Frequently asked questions about CPQ
What does CPQ stand for?
Configure, Price, Quote: assemble, price, quote. The three steps to make a fast, error-free quote for a configurable product.
What is the difference between CPQ and a product configurator?
A product configurator assembles the product; CPQ does that and calculates the price and produces the quote. CPQ is the broader flow, with the configurator as one part.
Does Odoo have a CPQ?
Standard Odoo has variants and a basic configurator. For full CPQ (complex rules, price build-up, BOM into production) we use CPQ Builder, an Odoo-native extension that writes real Odoo records.
Which companies benefit from CPQ?
Anyone selling configurable or custom products: machine building, furniture and interior, windows and doors, packaging, and project-based quotes. The more options, the bigger the gain.
What does CPQ cost?
It depends on the complexity of your rules and pricing logic. CPQ Builder starts at a fixed monthly fee; the setup depends on how much product logic we model. Work it out or talk through your situation.

In a short demo we show how configuration, price and quote run in one Odoo-native flow - with a real bill of materials underneath.
